Do you know which is the fastest growing Indian language in US?

According to a study made by an American think tank, the fastest growing Indian language in the world is Telugu. Seven South-Asian languages are among the top ten fastest growing languages in US.

Telugu, a south Indian language mainly spoken in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is said to have grown by 86% from 2010 to 2017, said an online video released by the World Economic Forum.

The data from the American Community Survey was compared with the number of people admitting to speaking Telugu language at home in America, by a study on languages spoken in the US for the past seven years. The number from the year 2010 was almost doubled last year with more than 400,000 Telugu speakers in the America.

The Telugu speaking population in India is 84 million and it’s the fourth among the most spoken languages in India, according to the census conducted in 2011 by the Indian Government. But Telugu has not yet reached among the top 20 of the most widely spoken languages across the world.

Main Reason

Prasad Kunisetty, founder of a non-profit organization in US, named Telugu People Foundation said that this is due to the links between the Hyderabad city and the US engineering and technology industries. Both the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are said to have more than 800 engineering colleges.

He also added that in the mid-90s, there was a sudden growth in the information technology that led to the huge demand for software engineers and many were recruited from these states.

Prasad moved to the US to make a career in the IT sector in 2001.

After Hindi, Urdu and Gujarati, Telugu is the fourth most spoken South Asian language in US.
