Indian e-rickshaws to get automatic head and taillights

The Indian government is gearing up to mandate the ‘adaptive lighting system’ into the e-rickshaws throughout the country.


The e-rickshaw drivers often switch off their vehicle’s light since it drains the battery. Because of this there has been increase in the number of accidents, since other vehicles on the roads are not able to see the e-rickshaws in the dark. Soon the option of switching on and off of the head and tail lights will be taken away from the drivers. Instead, an automatic adaptive lighting system has been proposed.


The sensor in the adaptive lighting system is set to a value beforehand. If it senses the decrease in the daylight below the set value, it turns the head and tail lights on.


LED Bulbs

Abhay Damle, joint secretary (transport) said that they are trying to find a solution to the battery drainage issue and are in talks with the manufactures to replace the existing lighting systems with the LED bulbs which consume less power.

Increase in the number of e-rickshaws

India is already home to 1.5 million battery-powered, three-wheeled e- rickshaws and the number keeps increasing. This electric vehicle revolution is not only taking place in cities but also in the rural areas of India. Almost 11,000 rickshaws enter the market every month. Most states are finding it difficult to ensure these vehicles being registered with the transport departments.

Increased number of accidents

There is also a huge concern over the increase in the number of accidents around the world since these vehicles don’t emit noise that would have alerted the cyclists or pedestrians. Due to this the European Union has announced the manufacturers to make sure these vehicles emit some kind of noise by 2019 to alert people around it. Taking lessons from these western countries, a transport ministry official said, India is also gearing up to eliminate the issues occurring in and due to the electric vehicles.
