Memorial Day Weekend gives the opportunity to wear casual clothes and relax for the whole period of time and also it provides the opportunity to get away from the big cities, as New York, to enjoy the surroundings areas with brand new and relaxing activities.
Once in New York City, one of the first places to visit is the Island of Manhattan, an important component of the city. During Memorial Day weekend a visit to the Intrepid Museum allow the enjoyment of Fleet Week with events out of charge as the Battle of Big Bands and meeting with NASA astronauts in homage to America’s military forces. Parades are a common event during this weekend and there is no exception in the island; so head to Riverside Drive to witness Manhattan’s Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Day Observance. If shopping is included in the activities to make, go to Washing Square to enjoy the Outdoor Art Exhibit where ceramics, contemporary artwork, and jewelry can be acquired. Food is also an important star during this celebration, so visit Green Village for a jazz brunch at North Square or a sandwich and sweet potatoes fries at Saigon Shack.
Close to the city is the location of Oneonta, where a parade also takes place with the participation of the city police and the fire departments, which also includes a collection of classic cars. Another traditional event in the area is the General Clinton Grand Prix Relay where tams of 10 paddlers participate in a 30-mile, five-leg canoe race. A relaxing time can be taken at the Joseph L. Popp, Jr. Butterfly Conservatory, an indoor garden with several kinds of butterflies, bird, and reptiles. Take a good bowl of French onion soup at lunch or dinner at the Farmhouse at Emmons or go to the Undercover Eggplant to enjoy an Oneonta Reuben or eggplant Parmesan sandwiches.
A good time is easily obtained at South Salem watching runners at the Annual Memorial Day Races and Fair. The races go from the 10k race to the Pee Wee run and they are meant for all kind of participants from children to adults on Monday morning. Once the races are over, fun is gotten at the fair by listening to live music, enjoying the local arts and craft demonstrations, games for kids and, especially, food like homemade doughnuts at the South Salem vacation rental.
So plan ahead all the activities to be done during this weekend and the moments enjoyed are going to be kept in the memory forever.
